Professor Juliane House, a noted German linguist and translation scholar, paid a two-week visit to UIC in April. She held two roundtable discussions with the students and staff of UIC’s Applied Translation Studies Programme (ATS) and shared her insights into translation theories, translation industry trends and career paths for translation majors.

ATS students are enthusiastic to ask questions

Prof House enthusiastically exchanged ideas with ATS staff and students about multiple topics. The students said that they cherished this chance to talk in person with the academic guru. One of them said: “This is a very rewarding experience. I believe we should have more events like this. Through Prof House’s visit, I have rethought about translation study and it echoes with what teachers taught us in class. By sharing her life experience and critical thoughts, Prof House not only answered our questions, but also enlightened us to think critically and find our own answers.”

Prof House was also shown around the campus and joined traditional Chinese courses like guqin (Chinese zither), Chinese archery and shadow puppetry. “This is a very interesting experience. I really enjoy the time in UIC,” the distinguished guest said after the visit.
