The Showcase Presentations on English Textbook Materials Development was successfully held in the afternoon of May 18th, at room T29-105 and via Tencent Meeting. These presentations showcased the collaboration between the English Language and Literature Studies (ELLS) Programme and CCC Kei Chi Secondary School (KCSS) in Hong Kong. ELLS-TESOL Year-3 students developed English textbook materials in consultation with KCSS English teachers.

The Acting Associate Dean of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences (DHSS) & the Programme Director of ELLS, Prof. John Corbett, offered opening remarks at the beginning of the event. He pointed out that “Although it is hard for us to satisfy the need of teachers and students at the same time, it is still worthwhile and meaningful for ELLS students to learn about how to arrange and design teaching materials by participating in this educational and practical project.”

The English teaching materials presented by ELLS-TESOL Year 3 students were designed specifically for KCSS Secondary-1 to Secondary-3 students. Students shared how they incorporated their knowledge and skills in English teaching learned from UIC into teaching materials design. KCSS English teachers, who attended online, were invited to provide feedback and suggestions on further materials development.

After the presentations, most students expressed that they have learned more about teaching materials designed for students of different grades. They also said that they have a clearer understanding of the role of textbooks in teaching.
