An Insight into Generative AI in Teacher Education

On 26 March 2024, the Department of Languages and Cultures (DLC) hosted a lecture entitled "Generative AI in Teacher Education: A Sociocultural Approach to Learning, Teaching, and Assessment Practices". The lecture, generously funded by FHSS Teaching and Learning Grant, featured Dr. Freek Olaf de Groot, a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of English, City University of Hong Kong, as the distinguished speaker. The talk attracted a sizable audience, with approximately fifty pre-service and in-service teachers, eagerly attending to hear his expert opinion.

Dr. de Groot was introducing the background information of Generative AI and education

The interactive lecture focused on the significant role of Generative AI in teaching and learning through the lens of sociocultural theory, highlighting the critical attention required for learning and assessment issues. It introduced the latest research frameworks and specifically demonstrated the functions that AI can provide in educational scenarios. While Generative AI has the potential to greatly facilitate students' learning, emphasis was placed on the importance of striking a balance between self-regulation and AI-aided learning. It is essential to adapt and accommodate AI changes in learning practices while maintaining the intended learning outcomes.

Learning issues in using Generative AI

During the discussion session, attendees were given the opportunity to exchange ideas on the effective use or non-use of Generative AI in constructing teaching and learning actions in groups. This session provided a platform to understand how AI can contribute to the creation of a harmonious teaching and learning landscape. The attendees' enthusiasm was evident as they explored the potential of Generative AI in education in the dynamic group discussions. The lecture concluded with a question that prompts the attendees to reflect on what it means to be ‘an educated person’ in an AI-mediated learning ecology.

A heated group discussion about the effective learning and teaching actions

As a token of appreciation, Prof. John Corbett presented Dr. de Groot with a souvenir, symbolizing the profound impact of the lecture on empowering attendees to judiciously leverage Generative AI in enhancing teaching and learning practices.
