Teaching staff in the English Language and Literature Studies (ELLS) programme at UIC have launched a free Massive Online Open Course: Introduction to Language Study: English Linguistics. Aimed at senior high school pupils and first-year university students, it gives students a taste of linguistic study in higher education. This is one of a number of projects developed at UIC and funded by Guangdong Province as part of the ‘Rush to the Top’ (冲补强) initiative, designed to showcase excellent programmes and make them widely available. Short videos by a number of the ELLS programme’s international teaching staff present information about the nature of human language, the description of the English grammatical and phonological systems, and key topics in semantics and pragmatics.
