Abstract:

Translation and interpreting are two different yet closely related activities. Likewise, the relationship between Translation Studies (TS) and Interpreting Studies (IS) is often debated. In this talk, the guest will compare the differences and similarities between the practice of translation and interpreting and discuss the research topics and methods of pedagogical research in TS and IS. The synergies and divisions between these two subfields are illustrated by findings of a thematic and bibliometric review (Pan et al. 2017). Dr Pan will present findings of two empirical studies that provide evidence to the complicated relationship between the learning of translation and interpreting, and between the practices of these two activities. Implications of these studies will be discussed, which will help to show the convergences and divergences between translator and interpreter training, as well as the practice of translation and interpreting. It may also offer inspirations for topic selection and research design in this field.

Dr. Jun PAN is Associate Professor in the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University. She works as Managing Editor of Bandung: Journal of the Global South and Review Editor of The Interpreter and Translator Trainer. Her research interests include digital humanities and interpreting/translation studies, corpus-based interpreting/translation studies, interpreting/translation and political discourse, learner factors in interpreter training, professionalism in interpreting, and bibliometric studies. Her articles are included in journals including Target: International Journal of Translation Studies, The Interpreter and Translator Trainer, Perspectives: Studies in Translatology, inTRAlinea, etc. She also published with Routledge, Springer, Peter Lang, etc.
