Workshop & Lecture by Gwen Bouvier, Distinguished Professor at Shanghai International Studies University – October 19-20, 2025
The Institute of Cross-Cultural Studies (ICCS) is delighted to host Gwen Bouvier, Distinguished Professor at Shanghai International Studies University, for two insightful academic events. We warmly invite you to attend.

Workshop: Navigating SSCI Publication: Developing Research with a Genuine Contribution to Literature
Publishing in top-tier SSCI journals can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to. In this practical workshop, Professor Bouvier shares insider insights from her experience as both a published author and co-editor of a leading international journal (see attached flyer).
Participants will learn how to:
  • Develop research that makes a real contribution to the field

  • Identify and target the right journals for publication

  • Craft manuscripts with genuine contribution and strong scholarship

  • Navigate rejection, avoid predatory journals, and handle publication pressure

    • Date & Time: 14:00–16:00, November 19 (Wednesday)

    • Venue: T2-301

    • Language: English

Public Lecture: Cancel Culture and Trigger-Ready Fragmented Interest Groups
In this distinguished lecture, Professor Bouvier applies Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis to examine hashtags supporting or criticizing Johnny Depp or Amber Heard in their 2022 trial. Her analysis explores how "trigger-ready" interest groups become activated by perceived transgressions, suggesting that cancel campaigns relate less to actual transgressions and more to how these fragmented groups become mobilized (see attached flyer).
  • Date & Time: 12:00–14:00, November 20 (Thursday)

  • Venue: T2-101

  • Language: English
