UIC Students' Play “The Way Back” Wins Awards in Competitions

The multi-act drama script “The Way Back” written by the “Luyu Team” of UIC has won awards in many competitions. In September 2024, the work won the gold medal (Comprehensive Category) in the Second Zhuhai-Macao Student Anti-Smuggling Creative Competition organized by Zhuhai Anti-Smuggling Office, which was praised by the judges and selected to participate in the Third National Student Anti-Smuggling Creative Competition in December. UIC was awarded the “Excellent Organization Award”, and the advisor of the work, Dr. Jianning Chen, was awarded the title of “Excellent Instructor”.

With the theme of anti-smuggling and centered around the smuggling of cultural relics and drugs, the drama work “The Way Back” shows the main character Chen Jin's struggles and choices between family love, justice and crime. College student Chen Jin meets Wang Xiaoliang, an anti-smuggling police officer, while she is constructing an anthropomorphic monologue about cultural relics in a college performance hall. Wang Xiaoliang's introduction to the smuggling of cultural relics makes Chen Jin's heart fluctuate. Upon returning home, she discovers that the family is discussing smuggling and gets into a heated argument with her parents, thus learning that the family has long been engaged in the smuggling of cultural relics and narcotics, which puts her in a dilemma between family love and justice.

Chen Jin's father, Chen Haiming, is instructed by Chen Dong, the leader of the Chen clan's smuggling, to negotiate a drug deal with Huang Zhen, a smuggler from outside China. When Chen Jin tries to stop it, she is scolded by her father who is, in reality, protecting her and hints her to call the police. Chen Jin eventually chooses to call the police, who successfully arrest Huang Zhen and Lin Xuan, and the criminal gang disintegrates. The case is concluded and the criminals, including Chen Haiming and Li Juan, are punished by the law, while Chen Jin is acquitted for reporting the case voluntarily. Finally, Chen Jin and Wang Xiaoliang come to the ancestral hall to reminisce about the past and look forward to the future. By showing the dangers of smuggling crimes and the struggles and growth of the characters, the script emphasizes the meaning of anti-smuggling and the belief that justice will ultimately triumph over evil, and provokes people to think about morality, the law and family relationships.
