On April 20, the event titled "Bamboo Grove Conversations Grace Our Home - A Parent-Child Guided Reading Session of Shishuo Xinyu" was organized by the teachers and students of CCGC, DCOM, FHSS, BNBU. The event was successfully held at the Wuguishan Sub-district Library, organized by the Wuguishan Publicity and Cultural Service Center and the Wuguishan Branch of Zhongshan Cultural Center. The event guided over 20 families through a journey through a thousand years through shared idiom stories, situational drama performances and fun activities, allowing families to appreciate the spirit and wisdom of famous scholars from the Wei-Jin dynasties, while passing on traditional Chinese virtues through parent-child reading together.
The event kicked off with an interactive game of Chinese idioms called "You Gesture, I Guess". The children used vivid body language to interpret classic Chinese idioms such as "Jing Di Zhi Wa" (a person with limited vision) and "Dui Niu Tan Qin" (casting pearls before swine). The children vied with each other to answer, and the scene was filled with constant laughter.
During the "Plum Taste Experiment" session, children closed their eyes and tasted various canned and candied fruits, understanding the power of psychological suggestion in "Wang Mei Zhi Ke" (quenching thirst by looking at plums) through the sour and astringent taste experience.
After reading the story of "Shi Ren Ya Hui" (Picking up others' wisdom) together with their parents, the children actively discussed and shared about whether imitation is a good way of learning.
The most touching scene was undoubtedly the "Shen Wu Chang Wu" (To possess nothing beyond one's essential needs). The students transformed themselves into the famous scholars Wang Gong and Wang Da of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and interpreted "the generosity of sharing" and "the wisdom of simplicity" with their tender yet sincere performances. After the reading, a parent said, "Wang Gong's story made me think that true education is not about giving children a lot of material things, but about passing on sincere and upright characters.
The CCGC students prepared a rich variety of prizes for the children, including memo pads, postcards, idiom picture books and the comic version of Shi Shuo Xin Yu. At the end of the event, the children exchanged the small stickers they had won by actively speaking up during the activity for prizes.
The assisting staff of the New Era Center of Wuguishan said, "This activity is an innovative attempt to integrate traditional culture with modern family education. In the future, we will launch more interesting parent-child reading series activities to make the classics truly "come alive" in family life.
This Shi Shuo Xin Yu leading reading event is also one of the achievements of the "Traditional Culture Communication in the GBA", Sub-project of FHSS’s Guangdong Provincial “RMS” project. Through immersive experiences and in-depth interactions, the event not only enables children to understand the virtues behind idioms but also invites parents to rethink the essence of education - just as Shi Shuo Xin Yu reveals: "Ethos lies in actions, not in words; family traditions are nurturing, not teaching."
