Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)
Upon completion of the Programme, students should be able to:
PILO1: Communicate in English clearly, critically and creatively within academic and professional contexts; |
PILO2: Identify and evaluate the main approaches and theories within the fields of language and literary studies; |
PILO3: Critically analyse and interpret data on language use and communication in literary and socio-cultural contexts; |
PILO4: Work independently or in collaborative teams in researching and developing materials for effective academic and professional communication; and |
PILO5: Develop an intercultural awareness and intercultural skills and strategies that synthesise the values of linguistic, ethical and cultural diversity and contributes to professional and personal growth. |
Concentration Objectives:
The ELLS Programme consists of three concentrations, and each concentration is designed with its specific objectives:
English for Professional Communication (EPC)
Literary Studies in English (LSE)
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
The curriculum of the EPC Concentration is to provide students with:
1. Strong English proficiency through focused and interactive courses in professional writing, communication and language.
2. Detailed academic knowledge and creative skills for students wishing to pursue advanced studies in professional writing, communication and language.
3. Practical, analytical and creative skills that can be applied to specialized areas such as business, education, publishing, law, and other fields.
4. An interdisciplinary perspective through the study of specialized topics in language and professional communication.
The curriculum of the LSE Concentration is to provide students with:
1. Strong English proficiency through focused and interactive courses in literature and language.
2. Detailed academic knowledge and creative skills for students wishing to pursue advanced studies in literature and/or language.
3. Critical thinking and creative skills relevant to the study of literature and language.
4. Knowledge of the cultural traditions and forces that have shaped English literature and language in contemporary societies.
The curriculum of the TESOL Concentration is to provide students with:
1. English language competence as a prerequisite skill for teachers of English as a second language (ESL), which pertains to the four skill areas—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—and includes classroom discourse and grammatical competence.
2. An in-depth understanding of the linguistic structure of English as it is used in the world today.
3. Skills necessary to analyse, synthesise and evaluate ESL course materials and teaching aids appropriate to learner needs and course objectives, and to apply up-to-date teaching approaches and methodologies.
4. A wide range of perspectives on the approaches, methodologies and practices in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages.
Graduation Requirements:
Starting from the 2022 cohort, students are normally expected to complete 151 units within the normative study period (i.e. 4 years) in accordance with the curriculum structure as follows:
3 The 2021 cohort is required to complete 150 units as stipulated in the Course Handbook. The course arrangements are basically the same as the 2022 cohort; however, the 2021 cohort only needs to finish 36 units of University Core courses.
