The 2025 Teaching Contest with the slogan ‘Have fun as you learn’, organised by Dr Jackie Yeoh, Assistant Professor of English Language and Literature Studies (ELLS) - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programme, was a resounding success. It showcased the creativity and talents of nearly 30 participants from various disciplines across three faculties and one school – FHSS, FST, FBM, SCC – demonstrating their skills in teaching different languages and dialects. The event, held on 19 February, which aimed to encourage students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world teaching scenarios attracted enthusiastic faculty members and students, culminating in a vibrant atmosphere of learning and innovation.

The event commenced with opening remarks from two distinguished guests, Professor John Corbett, Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning, and Professor Charles Lowe, Department Head of Languages and Cultures. Their inspiring speeches about the value of embracing mistakes and learning from setbacks resonated deeply with both participants and the audience. They generously shared their insights and encouragement, fostering an atmosphere of growth and support.

The panel of judges included esteemed professors, Dr. Malila Prado and Professor Charles Lowe, two fourth-year representatives from the TESOL programme, Chen Sitong and Long Xinyao, along with assistant instructor Jiachen Xu. Their collective expertise facilitated a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation of the presentations, while their involvement brought valuable insights and energy to the event.

Ten teams demonstrated unique creativity and skills in teaching a diverse array of languages and dialects, including Cantonese, Spanish, English, and Sichuan and Dongbei dialects within a fifteen-minute presentation, focusing on participation and engagement. Their presentations exhibited proficiency and meticulous preparation in delivering their respective language instructions.

After three hours of outstanding presentations, three teams emerged victorious. The Third Prize went to Double A, followed by HaJoRi receiving the Second Prize. The First Prize was awarded to Mickey House, celebrating their exemplary delivery and innovation in teaching.

This event would not have been possible without the generous financial support from the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at UIC, which played a crucial role in its realisation. The enthusiasm and dedication exhibited by the organising committee and all participants transformed the Teaching Contest into a memorable occasion, fostering a spirit of collaboration and excellence in education.
