Research Collectives

The three research collectives of the Institute of Cross-cultural Studies are centres of interdisciplinary collaboration with a focus on the nexus between the advancement of knowledge and the practical application of this knowledge in societal contexts. Their work is built on nurturing research partnerships not only within and between the collectives, but also with peers in other institutions locally and internationally in order to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries in pursuit of innovative responses to complex global challenges.

Language & Cultural Studies Research Collective

The Language and Cultural Studies Research Collective brings together experts from various disciplines committed to innovative research that explores the complex tapestry of language and cultural exchange in response to the challenges of our contemporary globalized world. Our researchers forge boundary-breaking interdisciplinary, inter-institutional, and international relationships to collaborate with peers likewise dedicated to understanding the dynamics of language and cross-cultural understanding and exchange in shaping an amenable global community. As a platform for academic exploration that fosters intellectual curiosity and interdisciplinary synergy, its comprehensive coverage of multifaceted issues, both applied and theoretical, ranges from the intricacies of language, literature, media and cultural studies to the nuances of translation studies in the digital age. Through its focus on these critical areas, this collective contributes not only to the advancement of knowledge in these fields but also to the practical application of this knowledge, with a mission to engage with and contribute to broader societal and cultural discussions.

The Communication Research Collective embodies a comprehensive approach to communication studies that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries and promotes inclusivity in pursuit of knowledge that generates innovative insights. Our mission of exploration of the interconnectedness of communication across cultures, ideologies, and media landscapes brings together scholars from diverse backgrounds within the field of communication and nurtures collaboration spanning a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from the study of digital media effects and comparative journalism to inquiries into Chinese classics, media ethics, and strategic communication. We promote the collaboration of the collective’s researchers with external contributors who share our passion for exploring the multifaceted dimensions of communication in an ever-evolving global context across diverse areas such as examination of advertising aesthetics, media anthropology, creation of thought-provoking documentaries, and advancement of knowledge in the realms of health communication, crisis communication, and colonial records history.

From the exploration of the impact of digital technologies on society's most vulnerable, to the examination of the ethical and legal implications of data-driven decision-making, our research is both forward-thinking and socially conscious. We aim to drive positive change in an era where digital skills are integral to understanding and addressing contemporary social issues. Our commitment to cross-disciplinary research fosters innovative thinking, deep insights, and transformative solutions to social issues like public psychological health, post-disaster construction, and labour development in the digital age.
