Experience the Depth of Sino-Foreign Cultural Narratives through Our Student Video Essays

From September 5 to 22, 2025, twenty student video projects were showcased on the electronic screen outside CHIAS COFFEE in BNBU campus. These works represent selected highlights from the 2024-2025 academic year’s course assignment for CCGC 3033 History of Sino-Foreign Cultural Exchange. Students enrolled in the course combined creativity with academic rigor to produce distinctive video essays, presenting rich cultural insights and unique research perspectives grounded in solid disciplinary knowledge and scholarly inquiry.

As a distinctive form of coursework, the video essay posed an interdisciplinary challenge for many students without prior media experience. For many students, it was their first encounter with video editing. Along the way, they continually refined their projects through learning new editing techniques and software. Each video is based on an academic topic relevant to the course, and required the use of many high-quality English-language sources. Striking the balance between academic precision, aesthetic appeal, and engaging storytelling became a central challenge and a process of sustained reflection. For the students, they considered the details such as filming equipment, sound recording, and lighting to pursue for better quality.

Through concise narration and thoughtful visual design, the students delivered compelling, well-structured works within four minutes. One student noted, “Only by choosing a theme you truly love and want to express can you create a work that resonates with others.” This sentiment captures the spirit of the entire class: sincerity and passion are the essential bridges between scholarship and audience.

The screening of these outstanding works was made possible through the dedicated guidance and strong support of course instructor Dr. Wei Chin Wong. Dr. Wong offered this valuable opportunity for students to present their work and for the wider BNBU community to experience the creativity and vitality of the classroom.

This video essay showcase is not only a display of course outcomes, but also a vivid reflection of the integration of interdisciplinary teaching and cultural practice in CCGC. These thoughtful and imaginative projects will inspire greater interest in and reflection on Sino-foreign cultural exchange in the community, which will continue brilliance in their pursuit of knowledge and creative expression.
