Field trip to Northern Guangdong to explore rural economic development, trade integration and resource management

From April 2 to April 7, 2021, students enrolled in the courses “Global Routes of Trade and Investment” and “Rural Economic Development and Transformation in Globalising China” participated in a six-day field trip to Northern Guangdong Province.

Organized by Prof. Simon Zhao, GAD Professor and Associate Dean for Research of DHSS, with the support of GAD Assistant Instructors Ms. Helen He Xi and Ms. Cinnamon Sun Yuan, the trip led students through a first-hand exploration of key dynamics of rural development, natural resource management and industrial investment in Guangdong’s hinterland.

A total of 34 students actively engaged in firm visits, cultural excursions and a series of lectures given by local experts and authorities. This unforgettable journey has given students the chance to gain a deeper understanding of patterns and drivers of socio-economic development in the Greater Bay Area, and to grasp their profound implications in the context of an ever more globalized China.
