Graduating with a four-year highest grade in major, I am working as a product operation employee in bilibili. What can I do after graduating from the major ? My experience offers a different answer. With fluent English speaking skill learnt in UIC and an internship in small business, I interned at Tencent Music Oversea Business Department. I invited a group of star singers to settle in Tencent Music with zero budget. The experience in Tencent helps me to receive a Super Special offer in bilibili after graduation. I use the logic thinking skill to write product operation proposals as I wrote assignments for courses, and have a responsible, professional rigor reputation in career. Globalisation and Development aims to equip students with excellence and nurture their ability to farsightedness thinking instead of preparing standardized professionals for a certain job. I hope every students in the major could understand the the good intention of GAD and explore endless possibilities in UIC.
"Studying in this major was an extraordinary, eye-opening experience: I met capable professors from different countries, with different perspectives and different teaching styles, but all endowed with the same commitment and passion for high-quality teaching. They ignited my desire to pursue things I never would have even imagined, such as becoming an international volunteer in Africa, participating in a semester-long study exchange program abroad, serving as an intern in a newspaper office and in an NGO and ultimately going for graduate studies in one of the best schools in the world!"
"My GIR studies have cultivated my ability not only to holistically analyse, but also to ultimately solve important politico-economic problems of our time, across a variety of countries. I was particularly fond of international development courses, which helped me find my direction in my graduate studies. Besides many curricular activities, I was also given the opportunity to participate in the ‘International Relations Forum’ of students from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao universities, to work as an intern in the foreign affairs office of one of the world's Top 500 enterprises, and to even go to Spain and Canada for summer studies! Therefore, I am very grateful to UIC and GIR for giving me so many opportunities to broaden my horizons."
"During my four years as an undergraduate student, I have broadened my horizons beyond national borders. The international studies conducted in GIR really transcend the traditional limits of social sciences and provide crucial links with a variety of key disciplines like data analysis, environmental science, economics and political science, which are all essential in modern governance. I ultimately found my interests in pursuing graduate studies in a field that bridges development, urban management and public health. With the help of professors, I was able to participate in overseas universities’ research projects and in internships in various government agencies. It was an honor and a blessing to choose GIR for my studies: it provided me with countless opportunities!"
"'You are here to become future leaders' is what Dr. Monaco told us when I first stepped into UIC. My four-year experience in this program allowed me to grasp the profound meaning of this sentence, and to fulfil it in ways that I could not fully understand at that time. Studying international affairs, in English, in an international college like UIC has been a truly unique opportunity, that has significantly impacted my future career goals. The highly relevant, comprehensive curriculum and the many extracurricular activities available to me in a variety of countries really shaped me into an aspiring ‘servant leader’. After graduation, I ultimately chose to pursue political economy and development studies at LSE, but received offers also from other top universities, like UCL and KCL.”
"No word could be more accurate to describe my life in GIR than ‘fruitful’. I greatly appreciate the diverse set of courses I took and the many opportunities this program offered me. The experience in GIR provided me with a window to explore and understand the fascinating complexity of our world. My additional ‘adventures’ in Kenya, Austria, and Brazil have further enriched my profile. It’s terrific to have the liberty to choose the country where I wish to work in the near future, in a field – international development – that I am most passionate about."
"In my four years as an undergraduate student in UIC, I received a comprehensive education that ultimately allowed me to join the Department of Anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where I’ve met lots of extraordinary people on a mission to change the world. My experience in the Programme has helped me develop key academic skills and nurtured important ethical principles. In particular, I have developed a more progressive perspective towards my studies, which covered a diverse range of countries across the globe, including Western nations, China and its rapid ascent, as well as Least Developed Countries on a path towards a better future.”
"To study this programme is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Here, I encountered diligent colleagues, highly committed faculty, and countless opportunities. I felt blessed to be part of this remarkable community and would certainly encourage those who have a passion for global affairs to join the programme."
"In order to understand the various global phenomena that occur as countries' border fade and societies become more interconnected, I decided to study in China, one of the most important actors in modern global affairs. My rigorous undergraduate studies at UIC equipped me with a solid academic foundation and with the ability to analyze international politics, world economy, development and sustainability. My experience at UIC helped me develop new insights to understand multi-cultural contexts, fast-changing technological progress and the need to manage and allocate resources effectively. I now see the world from a different, meaningful and modern perspective."
“The teaching and educational model in UIC is different from other mainland universities. GIR did let me understand that learning is not just memorizing, but looking at issues from different angles, and depths. This kind of learning has truly broadened my horizons. At the same time, the education models similar to foreign countries also laid the foundation for my postgraduate study.”
“In the four-year of study in GIR, I have taken almost all the elective courses related to development studies. During the process of exploring this field, I found myself also interested in its relation with cultural studies and anthropology. Besides academic learning, I achieved my dream of music. In the school “iMUSIC” club, I organized my own band and keep uploading my own songs on the internet. Now, I have signed a contract with the record company and released my own singles. I really appreciated the school and the effort of professors which made me become the ‘me’ now.”
“Influenced by GIR's knowledge intake and learning environment, I think I can adapt to every local environment more easily, and I can observe and learn more local culture and lifestyle with a more professional and unique perspective. Moreover, many thanks go to GIR professors who helped me much for the opportunities of overseas study, and created a harmonious professional atmosphere for me to learn more and better at UIC.”
“My experiences in UIC/GIR equipped me with communication and interpersonal skills which enabled me to communicate effectively across several channels and media, and to build solid relationships with a variety of stakeholders – which is especially important when working in a multicultural or cross-cultural setting, as I am in charge of Asia Pacific region. I do want to say to GAD students that earning this degree will potentially prepare you for many career paths, as yours are highly sought-after skills in any career you pursue or industry you ultimately work in.”
“In GIR, I exchanged to Swansea University. I also worked as an overseas volunteer in the Maldives and I interned at China-Europe Center, China News Agency, various government agencies as well as foreign enterprise. In my final year, I got offers from the London School of Economics and Political Science, University College London, ANU, University of Edinburgh and University of Manchester. I feel grateful to the major, not only for the course contents, but also for the professors and the general campus atmosphere that exerted great influence on me.”
"Having spent the last two years pursuing dual degrees in public policy and data analytics in the United States, I maintain that enrolling in UIC/GIR was one of my best decisions. With its breadth of offered classes, I was able to explore many subject matters, which helps find my academic interests and ultimately contributes to my development as a well-rounded individual. I really appreciate my professors for their encouragement and support throughout my time at UIC/GIR."
“I completed an MSc in Anthropology and Development Management from London School of Economics and Political Science in 2019. My studies in GIR and experience in UIC broadened my horizon, fostered my independent thinking, which benefits me a lot in my later studying and working life. I often recall my days in UIC and appreciate my professors, tutors and friends in the charming college campus.”
“It has been a diverse and fulfilled year in Johns Hopkins University after graduating from UIC. I dived into a complex world composed by economics, politics, energy, as well as the cultural and societal interplay. DC’s metropolitan cultural environment, outstanding talks in think tanks, and vibrant people flows have also enriched my academic and professional experience. My greatest blessing to my fellow students in GIR: try to open your minds, share thoughts with people from various fields, and harbor confidence indefinitely.”
“Topics and experiences in GIR have contributed directly to my diverse international perspective, equipping me with a highly relevant and competitive skill set applicable to a wide range of contexts. I can attribute my successes in working with international media, industry consultants and regional stakeholders to the GIR curriculum, providing me with the necessary skills to tackle projects in Hong Kong, Mainland China, the US and Europe. I can specifically recall key points of my career determined by knowledge gained from GIR courses.”
