On October 17, 2022, the Globalisation and Development (GAD) Programme had the honor to host Dr. YIN Hui - lecturer at the Department of Global Health of Peking University - as a special guest to the “Digitalised and Globalised World” Lecture Series, delivering a lecture on “Development Aid for Health (DAH): Practice and Experience”.
The lecture first addressed basic concepts of DAH, which included background, definitions and overviews of main trends and key areas of DAH and related financial flows. Then, it delved into different DAH approaches by assessing cases regarding EU, USA, UK and other countries. Finally, it introduced the key challenges and possible prospects of DAH in the near future.
In a Q&A session moderated by Dr. WU Shuang, Assistant Professor of GAD, Dr. Yin provided detailed answers to audience questions on the effectiveness and recipients of DAH and the role played by official development aid (ODA) in fighting against the global spread of COVID-19. Questions were asked by Mr. ZHANG Jing (GAD Year 2 student), Mr. ZHANG Qifan (GAD Year 4 student) and Mr. LIANG Hongshang (GAD Year 3 student).
Dr. Yin pointed out that DAH provides a favourable platform for multilateral cooperation on global health development, given the ever-expanding scope of aid recipients and the constant updating of aid provision tools. Although multilateral cooperation still has problems such as high transaction costs and long negotiation time, DAH will certainly be an important means to solve and combat major global health crises such as COVID-19.
