Guest lecture on International Development: Issues and Challenges

    On November 30, 2022, the Globalisation and Development(GAD) Programme, in the context of the Department’s “Social Sciences for the Globalised and Digital World Lecture Series”, had the honour of hosting the lecture of Dr. Lokki Wai, WHO representative to Vietnam, Research Scientist at International Center for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, giving lecture on International Development: Issues and Challenges.


    Dr. Lokki Wai comprehensively introduced conceptual framework, developmental history and related area of international development and first-hand experience working in WHO international development aid. Dr. Wai presented the audience with significance of international development aid and current uses and challenges.



    Dr. Lokki Wai explicitly list the current issues and challenges in international development aid.International Development aims to achieve a better world through global cooperation in comprehensive developmental perspectives, including health, education, economic, agriculture, environmental protection, climate change, industries and energy, infrastructure development.

    International Development Aid aims to end poverty, promote resilience on local natural resources, energy, public health in vehicles of NGOs, INGOs, consultancies, banks, private sectors and government transfer provide financial assistance, human resources development and monetization of commodity.




    Student and faculty members attending the event asked various questions during the Q&A session, including Prof. Simon Zhao (GAD professor).The GAD Programme and the Department of Social Sciences as whole wish to thank Dr. Lokki Wai, a public health expert, for taking the time to address our academic community.




    International development is one of concentrations of GAD. GAD offers comprehensive and professional curriculum in international sustainable development, cooperate with sustainable development organization to offer practical experience for students.

    GAD improves student’s understanding in international development, broaden students' wide and cutting-edge view in global cooperation through inviting guest lectures from academic and international organisations, sharing professional knowledge and first-hand experience. GAD students working and studying in international development around the word prove the efforts of GAD faculty and students.
