Lecture Series: ‘The Journey of Economic Globalization: Lights and Shadows’ by Professor Pompeo DELLA POSTA at the Belt and Road Institute, Beijing Normal University (Zhuhai)

On April 11, 2024, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) and the Intercultural Studies Center of the Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC) had the privilege of hosting Professor DELLA POSTA for a lecture of economic globalization. The lecture was hosted by Professor Zhao Xiaobin, Associate Dean of FHSS. Students from Global Routes of Trade and Investment participated in the lecture.

During the lecture, Professor DELLA POSTA traced the timeline of economic globalization in human history. He discussed its benefits and drawbacks — the "lights" and "shadows." Professor started from the earliest signs of globalization. For instance, the Etruscans in central Italy, Marco Polo's Silk Road and the discovery of the New World. Furthermore, he reviewed the different stages of economic globalization since the Victorian era, along with the economic theories that advocated for economic openness.

The lecture also discussed how protectionism has contributed to the economic development of various countries. For instance, the policy of trade protectionism has deeply embedded in American history and has been a pivotal instrument in securing its economic ascendancy. He deliberated how the protests has accompanied the early stages of globalization in the 1980s. The final part of the lecture focused on the current phase of "Slowbalisation[1]" and potential ways forward — an inclusive economic globalization, both internally and externally.

Professor DELLA POSTA's presentation was highly engaging, and taking the audience on a journey through the various historical periods of globalization. After the lecture, audience actively asked questions, to which the professor responded with patience and details. Professor Zhao Xiaobin also engaged in an in-depth discussion with Professor DELLA POSTA on economic development and globalization issues. We extend our gratitude once again to Professor Pompeo DELLA POSTA for taking valuable time to deliver an excellent speech to the UIC faculty and students.

[1] Slowbalisation was introduced by Adjiedj Bakas to denote the transformation in the characteristics of globalization and the diminishing speed of its progression. This term encapsulates the manner in which the creation and enforcement of policies related to globalization have contributed to a slowdown in the pace of global economic convergence.
