Studying MSc Data, Inequality and Society at the University of Edinburgh
Studying in IJ is a process of learning by doing. The curriculum covers all aspects of journalism and provides rounded practical skills, like news writing, photography, video making and data analysis, meanwhile it left us with enough space to explore knowledge from other fields. IJ has been pushing me to break through my barriers in many challenging tasks during those four years, in which I saw my potential and then had the confidence to do what I hadn’t tried before. Many investigative projects are achievements I’m still proud of, and they also have turned into a valuable academic legacy that I continue to develop in my postgraduate.
IJ is more about growth. I developed my ability to analyse problems, which enabled me to find valuable news angles and structural fault lines through multi-dimensional and even interdisciplinary thinking. My communication skill was improved. I have more courage to reach out and interview people I don’t know and am more able to empathise with them. In the group collaboration, I learned to contribute my own thoughts meanwhile respecting everyone’s ideas, through which I got to know my best friends.
Great gratitude for every knowledge and kind teacher, as well as all the peers in IJ who support each other. Though I’m not sure if I will be a journalist in the future, what I gained from International Journalism will benefit me for a lifetime.
