Why learn Spanish

“La lengua es la piel del alma” (Language is the skin of the soul) Fernando Lázaro Carreter

There are many reasons why you should study Spanish but here we give you the top ten:

  1. Spanish is the mother tongue of approximately 426 million people in the world.

  2. It is the official language in 21 countries so it will make you travel around the globe.

  3. Spanish is the 2nd most spoken language in the world after Chinese and the 2nd most used       language in international communication.

  4. Learning Spanish will open doors to new job opportunities and trade internationally.

  5. It will enable you to help others.

  6. It will increase your critical thinking skills.

  7. You will have more friends.

  8. It is healthy! Research indicates that knowing and using more than one language improves your memory, and reduces your chances of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

  9. You will be able to enjoy amazing books and movies.

  10. It will expand your own personal universe and it is fun!

Moreover, the Center for Languages, Linguistics, and Area Studies (LLAS) from the University of Southampton has published a report in 2005 identifying 700 reasons to study languages. This report highlights some reasons to study languages including: networking, and intercultural competence.

The report is available online and can be downloaded from the following link: https://www.llas.ac.uk/sites/default/files/nodes/6063/700_reasons.pdf
