On April 21, students from the Religion and the Arts: Eastern Traditions course visited Putuo Monastery (普陀寺) under the guidance of Professor Shawn (Xiang) Wang from the Centre of Foreign Languages and Cultures (CFLC).
This trip aimed to offer students who opt for general education courses more opportunities to engage in on-site investigation and experience course-related cultural content. The highlight of this trip was a visit to the Puji (Universal Relief) Art Museum (普济艺术博物馆) located within the monastery. The museum was founded by Putuo Monastery and serves as a comprehensive gallery of Buddhist art, integrating functions of exhibition, collection, research, public education, and cultural exchange. It boasts a diverse range of cultural relics, including rare manuscripts, glazed vessels, ceramics, purple sand vessels, Buddha statues, calligraphy and painting, and various artworks.
Professor Wang led the students in an organized tour of the museum, providing them with a firsthand experience of Buddhist cultural exchanges between China, Japan, and Korea. Moreover, he linked the architecture of Putuo Monastery with the content of the general education course, presenting a visual tapestry of Buddhist art to the students, who expressed their satisfaction with the field investigation.
