Each year UIC TESOL concentration students write and publish a textbook as part of their course in ‘Curriculum Development and Materials Design’. The textbook is edited by the course instructor.
In producing this textbook, students are able to bring together knowledge from the many different TESOL courses they have studied. It is also a good opportunity for students to realize that they themselves have acquired a significant TESOL-related knowledge base.
The textbook contains a number of important innovations that are rarely covered by traditional textbooks, e.g., the teaching of collocation (the way words combine) and the use of corpora (language databases) to illustrate how language is used in the real world.
