I have experienced great changes in the four years of study at ATS, and I truly cherish all my time here. Not only have I developed proficient language skills that allow me to shuttle between the diverse systems of English and Chinese, I have also grown in an all-round way. Benefited a lot from the systematically-designed courses taught by knowledgeable and patient teachers, I acquired advanced specialist expertise and professional codes needed to be a good translator and interpreter; while group discussions allowed me to discuss with my industrious classmates, and therefore teamwork abilities as well as strong ties of friendship were developed. In addition, various major elective courses gave me the freedom to choose the courses I am interested in and suit my future career goal. For instance, the Simultaneous Interpreting course has helped me to extend my study and better prepare for the challenging postgraduate study. All the experience in ATS is valuable to me. It equips me with all the qualities needed to be enrolled in a higher level of study, lays the foundation for my life-long learning process, and guides me to become a better me.

I chose to further my study in translation and become a professional translator staunchly, as I fell in love with translation during my four years of study at ATS.

Some say that when you turn your passion into your profession, you may no longer love it, but if you are doing what you love every day, you will have the motivation to keep on studying and working and be happy with the little progress you make. Although my master's degree in translating and interpreting focused more on the latter, becoming a professional translator is not challenging, thanks to the extensive practice and feedback ATS has granted me.

Days in ATS made me realize that translation is not only a discipline, a skill, but also a bridge that leads me to different fields and a wider world. Diverse curricula let me discover what I was passionate about, and the inclusive academic atmosphere at ATS allowed me to combine translation and my hobbies. It became a ticket for me to enter the industry I am now in.

At present, I work as a lyricist and screenwriter. I am always grateful for the training that I received from ATS. The four-year study equipped me with the ability to express delicately and made me become more sensitive to the power of language. Also, I developed the habit of being attentive to the underlying meaning beyond the words which benefits me a lot in my work.

I really miss my days at ATS. Every lesson, every group project, every discussion with my teachers is precious when I look back on it. I will keep going with the spirit of curiousness and creativity that ATS has taught me in the future.

At the age of 18, I still don't have a clear future development goal. From the limited subjects in high school to the sudden face of a variety of subjects in universities, graduates need to make choices in just a few dozen days. We are very puzzled. It is often said that young generations don't always know what they want, but they can clearly know what they don't want. So when I screened out the "dislikes" one by one, what was left in the end was my liking for "penetrating the world through words". Therefore, I chose the translation programme that will definitely help me lay a solid foundation for the language. I believe that it can give me a better understanding of the whole world.

I often admit that the translation programme exercises people. Chinese and English bilingual logic, communication and multi-tasking skills will be rapidly improved in the day-to-day exercise. The studies have also greatly helped my work in the promotion and landing of the brand in the overseas market, including email communication, the positioning of different products in different countries and markets, creative communication of marketing campaigns, and co-creating local promotion activities with branch companies. These three kinds of abilities in undergraduate (specifically UIC haha) laid a solid foundation for my quick adaptation to the current work.

My initiate of choosing ATS was started with my interest in English and translation. To dig into the English language and to explore the translation field were appealing to me.

I am currently working as a high school English teacher. During my tenure, I feel that ATS has indeed helped me to build a solid English foundation. Specifically, some of the translation theories andpracticesare pretty useful when I am teaching Chinese students now. In addition, what benefited me most was our various teaching projects, which generated my creativity, cooperation skills, critical thinking capability, etc.

Who I have become today was deeply influenced by what I met in ATS: UIC, varieties courses, my respectful teachers, and most importantly, my dearest friends.

Looking back on my four-year university life, I feel very fortunate to choose UIC and ATS initially. The English-medium teaching environment of UIC has significantly improved my English proficiency and helped me better adapt to learning and living in the UK. Consequently, I successfully obtained a master’s degree with a distinction. Moreover, the whole-person education of UIC has given me more possibilities for development, allowing me to keep trying and recognize my future direction. Now, I work in a promising company and engage in my favorite job.

Though the ATS programme is not too big, we are indeed a very loving group. The students are united and harmonious while the professors do their best to teach. Its small-class teaching model allows students to fully express their views in the classroom and makes professors get to know each student. Thanks to the comprehensive curriculum, students can not only learn translation knowledge and techniques in the classroom, but also get the opportunity to translation and interpretation practices in internships at various university offices.

At last, I hope that the younger students can make full use of resources, seize the opportunity, realize their dreams, and create infinite possibilities.

I chose Applied Translation Studies as my major four years ago because English was my best subject in school. Four years later, I realized that I got more than I expected in ATS. Language is not only a tool but also an art. This discipline has endless charms, making students both hate it and love it. At that time, we had a great number of readings and essays as well as exhausting exam papers, but thinking back, we actually had lots of fun. Although I am not working as a translator, my English language ability and communication skills trained by ATS, have helped me adapt to the working mode in international company and have given me the confident to overcome difficulties at work. Time flies, but the knowledge imparted by our professors and the wonderful memory with my classmates will always stay with me.
