Contest Background

   FLTRP·ETIC Cup

The 2024 “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” “Understanding Contemporary China” National Foreign Language Proficiency Contest for College Students takes place from April to December 2024.

The contest, guided by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, the Advisory Board for Undergraduate Foreign Language and Literature Teaching, and the Advisory Board for College Foreign Language Teaching, is hosted by Beijing Foreign Studies University and organized by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, making it a highly authoritative and influential competition in China.

The competition, guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, fully implements the guiding principles of the 20th CPC National Congress. The aim is to promote the implementation of “the three enters” (the important thoughts of “the three represents” must enter the textbooks, the classes and the students’ mind), innovate ideological and political education, deepen educational reforms, cultivate foreign language talents, tell good Chinese stories, and serve international communication.

This competition is open to full-time undergraduate students and postgraduate students from general colleges and universities across the country, and international students, with three major categories: English Group, Multi-language Group, and International Chinese Group.

The English Group features three competition categories: International Communication Comprehensive Ability (including Comprehensive Abilities and Public Speaking), Translation (including Translation and Interpretation), and Short Video. The competition adopts a three-tiered system: preliminary contests at the university level (campus contests), semi-final contests at the provincial level (provincial contests), and the national final contests (national contests).

It is particularly worth mentioning that this year’s Guangdong provincial contest of the competition will continue to be organized by UIC and will be held at UIC from November 2nd to 10th.

International Communication Comprehensive Ability Category

The International Communication Comprehensive Ability category includes a Comprehensive Abilities competition (accounting for 70%) and a Public Speaking competition (accounting for 30%). Contestants first participate in the online preliminary competition of the Comprehensive Abilities, which is held on September 21st in the T3-301 computer lab. Then, they submit a pre-assigned speech video for online evaluation at the designated time, and finally, they participate in the live impromptu speech competition held on September 25th in T29-106.
